Calm Down and Trust Yourself: Subconscious Language Acquisition

Stephen Krashen and Steve Kaufmann are some of the language acquisition professionals that I really look up to and their thinkings is what I have based the Transposed Classroom’s curriculum upon.

Having grown up trying to learn languages by grammar points and flashcards but with not much immersive context, I can tell you that my speaking has suffered. Can I pass a test? Sure. However, I lack confidence in really being able to use the language comfortably, even after 10 years of living in Japan! The reason being is because I was a textbook lover, a test-taker and I figured I didn’t need to immersive myself in the language to learn it!

What that really means is that it is all technique and no heart! I’m also a musician and it’s a very similar story. Think about a soloist that has all technique but no heart. It’s easy to understand in this context.

However, over the last year, I have been immersing myself in reading Japanese novels and listening to Japanese podcasts and my understanding of Japanese sentences has started to flourish. Not only that so many new words have been popping up in my ears! The best part? I feel like I haven’t even studied in the last year! Isn’t this what everyone wants? Language acquisition without really studying! Enjoying yourself in the language and its stories!

I’m not entirely against tests, grammar textbooks, and flashcards but I have definitely leaned on the side of thinking these things are supplemental and not essential. Learning to trust that we are subconsciously learning is hard, especially for adults, therefore, my aim at the Transposed Classroom is to show children and their parents that it can be done!
