Is Reading the Answer to Perfection?

Yesterday in my lesson, I worked with a fairly advanced student on irregular past tense verbs. Many of these were very easy for him but I also included verbs that he had never heard of before so, in all fairness, he should get all those wrong. Which he mostly did… BUT every time he guessed something wrong, he could also tell that his answer sounded weird. He could tell that it didn’t fit in the regular “ed” ending but of course, he didn’t quite know the correct answer yet. This is where the magic of reading lies.

The Magic of Reading

Is reading the answer to perfect speaking, perfect writing, and understanding everything you hear? No, of course not. Reading has advantages and disadvantages just like studying grammar point-by-grammar point or flashcard-by-flashcard. However, the one thing that reading can do that those other types of study methods can’t is, ingrain the feeling of the language inside you. This can only come with full immersion and lots of it! Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the opportunity to be fully immersed in an English speaking environment and fully immersing oneself in listening to English, although very beneficial, is very hard for most people, so reading little-by-little, level-by-level you are able to immerse yourself and grow your other skills at the same time.
