I read an article today about Mao Asada turning 30 years old. In the article it started with the debate of whether we should say “Mao Asada is already 30 years old?!” or “Mao Asada is just 30 years old?! It went on to talk about how her dream is to live in an old folk house in the countryside and live a more self-sustainable life. I can relate to this because last year, at the age of 41, I moved from Tokyo to the countryside! I may not be an expert in anything but I truly believe that age is just as number. I started piano at 18 years old, started Japanese at 29 years old, and cello at 37 years old!
When considering careers, families, lifestyles, and so much more, the question of “already” or “just” has always been around. With learning English it’s the same thing. My child is ALREADY 10 years old, is it too late for them to become fluent English speakers? My child JUST goes to English conversation school, could they even compare to students who graduated from an international preschool? So there are two things I want to point out.
One, we shouldn’t compare. Yes, you hear this all the time but it’s true! Unless perhaps you want your child to compete in an English competition comparable to the Olympics, comparing your child’s skill to another child’s skill will usually only result in disappointment because there will always be someone better. Don’t get me wrong, I think a little competition is healthy and can be motivating but in the end, your English journey is only yours.
Two, you are in control of your learning outcomes! No matter how fun the teacher is or how good the curriculum may be, your child’s progress is going to be dependent on their efforts. This does not always mean “studying”. It can mean showing up to class, listening to something even if you don’t understand it, stepping outside of your comfort zones, etc.
Life isn’t black and white or already and just. As long as there is a future we have the ability to work hard, evolve and find that perfect folk house at any age.
