Entrance Exams

Today private schools in Tokyo started their entrance exams for middle school. They say we are moving into the “entrance examinations peak period”!

To tell you the truth I loved exams growing up, and I still do for certain reasons.  So I can understand why so many educational systems, not only the Japanese system,  move towards this type of education. However, as a grown-up I regret not thinking more about how to apply the things I was learning for all the different exams. In the end, the scores to the tests don’t matter as much as the creativity and effort of the individual. Why are we learning math, why are we learning science, why are we learning English?! I wish an adult or class would have asked me that question over and over. Not only the Japanese educational system, but so many educational systems around the world need to work on showing the students how the information they are learning can be beneficial to their life.

Students, good luck on your exams but also, remember this information you are learning can be applied and used in many different ways. Be creative and don’t only think about the results of the tests. Teachers and administrations, we need to be creative to teach the children to be creative! Remember that we are teaching many individuals and not just the answers to a test.
