Ai Fukuhara, the Japanese former Olympic table tennis player, recently announced that she has started a social contribution company. In her own words she said, “I wanted to help create an environment where children can pursue their dreams and help create a path for future junior athletes, and do activities that are useful to the world.” She went on to say, “Even though the world is facing so many difficulties, I was worrying about what I could do, where I fit in. However, I would like to make use of my experience so far and as a person, not a sports star, I want to work on things that are close to people’s hearts.”
When I read this I felt a bit of a connection to her. Very often when a person starts out on a career path, they want to become the best in their chosen field. It’s all about them. I, too, desired to be a big-wig in the educational field or to discuss with people around the world about curriculum development! But over the years I have found the times I am happiest putting my energy into work is seeing the growth of a child in their English journey. Showing one elementary child that their hard work pays off and watching them enjoy English is truly what makes me work hard everyday!
