Yoshiro Mori

Japan’s aging population often means the chosen way of thinking is not progressive but this often allows for amazing traditions to remain. This makes Japan a very endearing and special country. It’s one of the reasons I really enjoy living here. However, Olympic chief, Yoshiro Mori’s, sexist comments about women show the dark side of what happens when thinking does not progress with the years. Gender equality in Japan remains low and old, non-progressive men like Yoshiro Mori highlight the prevalence of this thinking still remaining in Japanese culture.  Women are the backbone of the family yet respect towards our opinions, time, and expertise are often pushed under the rug. As an online English school for elementary school children, I know that expecting the children to join classes or study independently at home means the person making that happen is most likely going to be the mother. I love Japan and the Japanese people however, especially with the invention of the internet, the world is becoming smaller and smaller and people around the world are becoming more and more informed of the toxic ideas that have segregated a minority of people in the past.  Children in Japan need to learn another language, such as English or Chinese, to allow them the opportunity to think for themselves about the topics of the world with people from around the world and not just stick with the out-of-date thinking of old Japan.
